Saint-Just Elsewhere in France Besides Blérancourt and Paris, there are other French cities with Saint-Just-related sights to see. This page contains information on these cities. They are reachable by train from Paris or from most other cities.
Angers Angers is perhaps most notable for being the home of David d'Angers, a prolific sculptor who loved his town so much, he renamed himself after it. Among his many works are the most famous (and most beautiful!) bust of Saint-Just and a medallion. You can see these works in person at the Galerie David d'Angers. When I visited in June 2002, I simply sat in awe of these fantastic works for almost an hour. The museum is open every day except Monday, from 10-2 and 2-6. The Saint-Just works are located on the second floor (premier étage) towards the front of the building. Galerie David d'Angers Telephone: 011.33.2.41.87.21.03 (North America) My Photograph of the
Bust While in Angers, try visiting the Chateau, which you are given complete freedom to explore. Not only is it absolutely stunning, it also houses the magnificent Tapestry of the Apocalypse, the oldest tapestry of its size and importance. Other things of interest in Angers include the Plantagenet Cathedral and Le Petit Train, a little tourist "train" that drives around the city for a 45 minute tour.
Tours Tours is the home of the Institut de Touraine, the premier school for learning the French language. (Also, where I attended throughout June, 2002! ^_^) Unfortunately, one runs out of things to do in a town that size after a couple weeks, which is why I took it upon myself to search for Rue Saint-Just, a small street in the southern part of town. I found it. A few other things of interest in Tours include the beautiful St. Gatien's Cathedral (located a couple blocks away from my host family's house-- needless to say I spent a lot of time there), the Musee des Beaux Arts and its giant Cedar of Lebanon, and the lovely walks along the Loire. Tours is about an hour away from Paris by TGV and an hour the other way from Angers. |
