5000 Years of World History in Comic Strips
Someone sent me scans and translations from this manga comic, but unfortunately I lost his or her name and email address. For a long time, I didn't know where these scans were from, but Meng Xiaoying was kind enough to tell me the title of the work. I still do not know the author; I've heard that it was written by Osamu Tezuka, but it doesn't really look like his work to me.
If you have any more information on who wrote this manga or on where it might be obtained (or if you were the one who sent me these pages in the first place!), please email me at susanna at saint-just dot net.

Page One
(The boy is working as a waiter in a rather dilapidated eating house.
The following sequence takes place directly after the king is brought
back from Varennes, to the complete silence of the crowd.)
Frame 1 - Maxime: The people have abandoned the monarchy. A king who
has lost his people can no longer reign.
The boy: Although there are so many people, it is so quiet it's creepy.
Don't you think so?
Frame 2 - The boy: Is this gentleman then Robespierre? I admire you
very much.
Maxime: Now I am very happy to see we must rely on the strength of
you, the people.
Frame 3 - Maxime: We'll wait for a chance to get rid of the aristocracy.
Frame 4 - Saint-Just: Robespierre, what happens now?
[The note at the bottom says: Robespierre / 1758 1794. Foremost among
the revolutionary leaders.]
Page Two
Frame 1 - Maxime: And among the poor people, the cries for the abolishment
of the aristocracy and the embracing of socialism grow stronger every
day. The aristocratic faction protects the aristocratic system stubbornly,
and revolution grows steadily and calmly.
Frame 2 - The boy: I don't really understand.
Frame 3 - Voice on left: Hmph, these fellows also feel the danger
they face.
Voice on right: The aristocracy hopes to secure the flight of the
king by holding him hostage. But is there no wrong in this?
Frame 4 - Saint-Just: Originally, it was a revolution started by the
capitalists, but they got scared of the daily increasing strength
of the people. So now they are protecting the king's power instead.
Frame 5 - The boy: Is our strength so great?
Page Three
Frame 1 - The boy: To abolish the monarchy- is this acceptable?
Frame 2 - Maxime: Use the king's flight to get the aristocracy abolished
and mobilise the people.
Frame 3 - Maxime: The next step is to call for the king to step down
in the name of freedom! It can be done. We have brought the king to
Paris so that we shall have bread to eat.
[The Note: This was Robespierre, who earned the trust and respect
of the people through his high morals. However, it was also he who
was responsible for the unforgettable Terror.]
Frame 4 - Saint-Just: As they say, we make our own chances.
The boy: As they say, the hand of politics is like children playing
at war.
